John was elected to the Board of AIG, Inc. in May, 2011 when the U.S.Treasury owned 92% of the company and served until May, 2022. From 2013 to 2019 John served as the Chairman of the Risk & Capital Committee. He also served on Audit, Regulatory, and Technology Committees during his time at AIG.
In October 2022, Mr. Fitzpatrick joined the board of directors of Assurely based in Austin, TX and became the Chairman in February 2024.
From June 2012 to May 2014 Mr. Fitzpatrick served as the Secretary General of The Geneva Association, the leading international think tank of the insurance industry. From September 2015 to September 2017, Mr. Fitzpatrick was Chairman and Partner of White Oak Global Advisors, LLC.
From July 2006 to June 2010, Mr. Fitzpatrick was a partner and a Director of Pension Insurance Corporation Holdings, LLP and its fully authorized insurance subsidiary Pension Insurance Corporation Ltd., a leader in the provision of pension insurance in the United Kingdom with £47 bn (strike 40.9bn) in assets under management insuring c.302,000 (strike 130,000) pension fund members.
From July 1998 to April 2006 he was a member of Swiss Re Group’s Executive Board and Executive Board Committee. He served Swiss Re as the company’s Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) from July 1998 to March 2003, Head of Life & Health Business Group April 2003 to September 2005 and Head of Financial Services October 2005 to April 2006. During his tenure as Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Fitzpatrick was responsible for the strategic asset allocation of the companies’ investment portfolio which totaled over $150 billion.
From January 1996 to June 1998 Mr. Fitzpatrick was a Senior Managing Director of Insurance Private Equity firms for the Zurich Insurance Group, Swiss Re and Credit Suisse, focusing on start-ups of insurance companies.
From January 1990 to December 1995 he was Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Kemper Corporation, a NYSE-listed financial services company based in Chicago. At Kemper, Mr. Fitzpatrick was responsible for the strategic asset allocation of the company's investment portfolio which totaled $12 billion. Mr. Fitzpatrick started his career with Kemper Corporation as a financial analyst in 1978, holding several positions in corporate finance until 1990.
Mr. Fitzpatrick is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) (1987), a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (1979, non-practicing) and has a BBA from Loyola University of Chicago (BBA) (1979). He is a citizen of the U.S.A. and the Republic of Ireland.
Mr. Fitzpatrick was a member of the Board of the Association of British Insurers from 2003 to July 2006, a Director on the Board of Atradius N.V., a credit insurer from 2005 to 2007 and a director of Validus Holdings, LTD, a NYSE-listed Bermuda-based Reinsurer from February 2010-March 2011.
